Frequently Asked Questions
- Q
- How do I know what kind of care my loved one needs?
- A
- The first step to starting service is an “intake” conversation with a nurse or coordinator. This “intake” will help us know what type and how much assistance might be needed. The second step will be to arrange an assessment visit to the home. Scheduling the days and times, as well as activities of assistance will follow.
- Q
- How much will it cost?
- A
- Fees are based on a “sliding scale” formula. The amount will be determined based upon the individual’s verifiable income. As a not-for-profit agency we are able to offset the full cost of care with funds raised through grants and special fundraising events for individuals who are not Medicaid eligible, yet have limited financial resources. The availability of these funds determines the agency's ability to provide them to the community.
- Q
- When are aides available?
- A
- Aides are available to meet hourly, as well as 12 hour shifts, and live-in needs. 7-days a week, 365 days a year, 24/7.
- Q
- Can aides drive the person they are caring for to appointments?
- A
- The aide can use the client's car to drive her or his client to appointments.
- Q
- Are employees bonded and screened?
- A
- As a licensed not for profit, all of our staff are subject to an FBI criminal background check. All staff are covered by liability insurance. We have very stringent references requirements. All staff must pass a physical examination.
- Q
- What is a licensed home care agency?
- A
- Home care agencies that are licensed by the New York State Department of Health must adhere to the regulations of that state department. A licensed agency may only employ certified personal care aides and home health aides to provide home care. This means the aides will have been trained using a NYS Department of Health approved training program. In order to maintain their certification, aides working for licensed agencies must fulfill on-going educational requirements. Unlicensed agencies do not have to adhere to any external regulatory body, nor do they have any reporting requirements. Only licensed agencies may provide hands on care such as assistance with personal care and grooming.
- Q
- What is an accredited home care agency?
- A
- Home care agencies that are accredited must meet quality and performance standards of the independent accrediting body. This provides a second layer of oversight to ensure that the care being provided is of the highest caliber possible.
- Q
- Can we meet and interview the aide prior to making a decision?
- A
- Yes. Aides can be interviewed prior to making a decision to begin home care services. There is a $25 fee which is waived if a decision is made to use the services of that particular aide.
- Q
- What if a loved one needs short term care after surgery?
- A
- Care is offered for both short term convalescence and for conditions that require longer term or ongoing assistance. Care is also available for individuals who require care periodically. For example: when a customary family caregiver is not available, has to attend to their own medical needs or has an engagement out of town.
- Q
- Does my insurance cover Home Aides?
- A
- It may. Certain conditions may apply. You may check with your Long Term Care insurance provider, or, we will be happy to do so for you, with your permission.
